Basic Macroeconomic Data for the Slovak Republic


Gross domestic product, unemployment, foreign trade and ratings of the Slovak Republic are important data for investors.

The gross domestic product (GDP) in 2003 represented 1,195 billion SKK (in May 2004 an equivalent of 30 billion EUR or 36 billion USD), which is a 4.2% progress comparing to 2002. With the population of about 5.4 million inhabitants, it makes about 221,000 SKK (5,500 EUR or 6,700 USD).

The unemployment rate was around 16% in the first quarter of 2004.

In the year 2003, the foreign trade of the Slovak Republic was negative with deficite of 24 billion SKK. Import was 827 billion SKK and the export 803 billion SKK.

The gross foreign debt of the Slovak Republic at the end of January 2004 represented 17.9 billion USD.

The investment rating of the Slovak Republic by consulting agencies for investors is the following:

  • Moody's Investors Service: A3
  • Standard & Poor's: BBB+
  • Fitch Ratings: BBB+
